Between Poitiers, the region's two thousand year old capital, and the Futuroscope Theme Park with its celebration of new imaging technologies, the department of Vienna loves contrasts. The "Poitou Threshold" is far more than a stopping place.
According to the scale prepared by La Vie immobilière, an apartment in Poitiers goes for 1,600 € per m2, with prices rising about 10% per year. For houses, the average is around 150,000 € in Poitiers and 135,000 € in the department as a whole.
Calculate 80,000 € for an attached house for renovation, 200,000 € for a townhouse in Poitiers. Prices are close to 400,000 € for an executive home in the country or a spacious restored home in Châtellerault. You can still find lovely old properties in the Poitiers area at between 800,000 and one million euros.
Poitiers' medieval streets hold many half-timbered houses. Built on a wood stud framework, their half-timbering served to reinforce their structures. Walls were traditionally filled with cob and, more recently, with unbaked bricks. Starting in the 18th Century, facades were often plastered for aesthetic reasons. Many houses of this type are built "with corbel": the upper stories jutted out over the ground floor, adding floor area above the street.
Thanks to the TGV, Poitiers and Châtellerault have become a gateway to the capital (about 1 h 30 min). Ryanair provides daily Poitiers-London flights, and Airlinair links the Vienne prefecture to Lyon, where many national and European connections can be made
A natural thoroughfare at the crossroads of the Aquitaine Basin and the Paris Basin, and of the Massif Central and the Massif Armoricain, Vienne is often called the "Poitou threshold." Around Poitiers, already a provincial capital back in Gallo-Roman times, the department is divided into four parts to charm its visitors.
To the northeast, the Châtelleraudais, through which the Vienne flows, alternates between wooded dales and slopes dotted with châteaux and country houses. A true jigsaw of groves and forested areas, the Southeast, around Montmorillon, invites all sorts of hiking. The Northwest has green hills and chalky soil where vineyards grow, and where châteaux and ancient dolmens stand. Lastly, the Southwest, with the Charente running through it, is a fisherman's paradise and the delight of archaeological site and Romanesque churches enthusiasts.
Vienne is under moderate maritime influence. Consequence: winters are mild, summers relatively cool and temperatures only fluctuate slightly. Rainfall, between 600 and 800 mm per year, remains reasonable.
