Vendée natives have always turned towards the Atlantic, with its promise of fortune and freedom, and also towards the land, with its typical mosaic of hedged farmlands.
While the average price of apartments doubles between La Roche-sur-Yon (1,500 € per m2) and Sables-d'Olonne (3,400 €), the price of single homes is considerably more homogeneous. According to La Vie immobilière, properties almost everywhere are going for around 180,000 €. However, prices are different for the renowned seaside resorts and islands (calculate at least 350,000 € for a house in Noirmoutier and 450,000 € on the Ile d'Yeu). A few restored châteaux are available starting at 800,000 €, with fine old homes starting at 300,000 €.
Vendée housing is as diverse as its settings. Schist is the principal material used on traditional farms. The half-round tile roofs are characteristic of the department, on both tenant farmhouses and low houses along the coast, with their whitewashed walls and narrow openings, sheltering the dwelling from sun and wind. Except for the bourrine—the traditional Vendée marsh home—which harvests its reed thatch from its immediate surroundings.
The TGV Atlantique puts La Roche-sur-Yon 3 hours from Paris (connection in Nantes, then 45 minutes by TER). Calculate 30 extra minutes to reach Sables-d'Olonne. The nearest airport, Nantes Atlantique, serves the major French cities, as well as London and Geneva.
Vendée's hedged farmland is sprinkled with hills and windmills. The Poitou marshes, partially drained by human hands to create polders for growing tulips, are reminiscent of certain Dutch landscapes.
The department boasts 200 km of Atlantic coastal dunes, with fishing ports and golden sandy beaches filling the shorelines of Saint-Jean-de-Monts, Saint-Gilles-Croix-de-Vie, and Sables-d'Olonne. Connected to the mainland by bridge and submersible roadway, the island of Noirmoutier is split between salt marshes, polders, villages and beaches. Farther offshore and wilder, Ile d'Yeu paces itself to the rhythm of ferries bearing serenity seeking visitors.
Everywhere, in gardens and ecomuseums recounting the lives past inhabitants, nature takes center stage. An often epic life, as recalled in historical spectacles performed on summer evenings at the Puy-du-Fou chateau.
Vendée enjoys a maritime climate, mild, rainy and windy in autumn and winter, and dry and relatively cool in summer.
