Real estate Seine-Maritime: the call of the sea

High cliffs and busy ports, along with peaceable groves and majestic forests: Seine-Maritime has many contrasts.

 Traditional housing

A local peculiarity, the clos-masure is an original kind of farm: to provide shelter—from the wind more than invaders—, it is surrounded by a tree-planted embankment… what they call a fossé [ditch] here! Many manors also dot the countryside, often flanked by a dovecote, a reminder of the high regard in which the delicate flesh of this fowl was once held.

There are two opposing schools of thought on the shore: fishermen's houses, with alternating brick and flint, turn their backs to the sea, while seaside villas, built in the Nineteenth Century, resolutely defy wind and tide.

Location

Accessible by ferry from England and Ireland, Seine-Maritime is less than two hours from Paris by car or train. Very soon, a TGV link will bring Le Havre to within an hour and 15 minutes from the capital.

Two airports, Rouen and Le Havre-Octeville, serve several European destinations, with connections in Lyon.

Scenery and activities

Sea side, the department has the longest line of cliffs in Europe: 140 km! The most famous are indisputably the ones at Etretat.

Nevertheless, these majestic cliffs know how to take a backseat, so life can go on. More than 50 valleys and hanging valleys hold pebble beaches and commercial and fishing ports, like Dieppe or Fécamp, from which fishing boats once headed to Newfoundland.

Inland, groves and pasturelands, cultivated fields and forests alternate in Pays de Caux and Pays de Bray. From Dieppe's massive castle to the Gros Horloge tower in Rouen, the city which, sadly, harbored the famous trial of Joan of Arc, Seine-Maritime is also a land of history, particularly religious history. Rouen's Gothic cathedral and several abbeys, especially Jumièges, are reminders of its past.

Weather

Bathed by a temperate maritime climate, Seine-Maritime enjoys mild winters and cool summers, with a narrow temperature range. Wetter than back country, the coastline is also windier. Consequently, clouds rarely linger and the sun is never far behind.

In town

  • Le Havre: The most heavily damaged port in Europe at the end of the Second World War has become a modern city, honored by UNESCO for its innovative use of concrete. As the second port in France, in the heart of a metropolitan area of 300,000 inhabitants, the city has always focused on maritime transport, shipbuilding and the petrochemical industry.
  • Rouen: Although 80 km from the English Channel, the fifth port in France feels the tides. As the center of a metropolitan area of over 400,000 inhabitants, Rouen is the site of intensive cultural activity, with no fewer than eight theaters, many museums, an opera, and the Zenith.
