With its ocean and lazy rivers, noteworthy islands and cities of art, the Poitou-Charentes region – consisting of Deux-Sèvres, Vienne, Charente et Charente-Maritime –, has several millenia of tales to tell its visitors. And the lasting power to sustain it.

Except for the highly prized island of Ré, where prices are soaring, and La Rochelle, where the square meter is approaching 3,000 €, real estate remains affordable. In Angoulême, Cognac, Niort and Poitiers, apartments can be had for between 1,000 and 1,500 € per m2. In Deux-Sèvres or Vienne, you can still find cute townhouses and old country residences for under 100,000 €. Executive homes and restored farms go for around a million euros in Charente-Maritime, between 400,000 and 800,000 € in the other departments.
Fine Charentes homes, with their polished white stone facades and rural Poitou marsh houses that put wood, clay and reeds to good use: regional housing is as varied as there are raw materials to be had. Many cities and villages have remarkable examples of medieval homes: half-timbered houses, dark half-timbering surrounding walls made of cob or, more recently, of unbaked brick.
The Poitou-Charentes region has been living in tune with water forever. Bathed by the Atlantic, crisscrossed by rivers with character like the Charente or the Sèvre Niortaise, and holding a large part of the Poitou wet marsh, it passionately cultivates the dynamic identity of its islands: Ré the white and Oléron, of oyster farming fame. Everywhere, its gentle waters have been rendered navigable to make exploring laundry houses and mills easier…
Its exceptional cultural heritage bears witness to a rich past written by major figures (Eleanor of Aquitaine, François 1er, and Charles Martel). Beyond Poitiers, already a provincial capital in back Gallo-Roman days, the region's territory is strewn with Romanesque churches and châteaux, often remarkably well preserved. Along the coast, military defensive works are deployed, such as the La Rochelle fortifications and the famous Fort Boyard. Everywhere, cities and villages draw their pride from their medieval walls, keeps and back streets with their half-timbered dwellings. Its history, henceforth, is being written into the future, particularly at the Futuroscope, Parc européen de l'image.
This is a land where epicureans find grace, in a region that raises livestock (crowned by the AOC Charentes-Poitou), oysters and wine grapes: The Charentes pineau and Cognac have long since earned their letters of nobility.
The Poitou-Charentes region's weather is influenced by the ocean, with mild but rainy winters and dry, moderately hot summers. The average annual temperature is close to 12°C, with between 1,800 and 2,000 hours of sun.
