Mayenne is hedged farmland where livestock farming prospers, with a population harmoniously spread among communities with a human face and architecture reconciling the past with the present.
La Vie immobilière places the over all square meter price for the department at around 1,300 € and the average sale price of houses at 122,000 €. With this budget, you can purchase attractive townhouses in good repair in Laval, farm style country homes and farms. Plan on spending at least 300,000 € for a handsome old property with outbuildings, in move-in condition.
The schist, granite and, more rarely, marble, quarries, along with tufeau from the neighboring Saumur area, constitute the basic material for traditional Mayenne structures. The gable roofs are covered with slate, mostly from Renazé, in the southwest of the department.
With its airport is limited to business travelers, the city of Laval is connected to the capital and major European cities by the TGV Atlantique. Paris is an hour and a half away, Lyon, 3 and a half hours by direct route, Lille is 3 hours 45 minutes, and London, 4 and a half hours.
The most humble in area and the least populated of the Pays de la Loire region departments contentedly cultivates a mostly rural, agri-food tradition. Only three of its cities, Laval, Mayenne and Château-Gontier, have more than 10,000 inhabitants.
Nevertheless, Mayenne has a rich and diverse cultural heritage, tracing the great moments of several thousand years of history, as can be seen in the many megaliths dotting the hedged farmland and the Jublains Gallo-Roman site. Many châteaux from every period line the banks of the Mayenne river: Laval and Mayenne, as well as Lassay, an imposing fortress built on a site where three châteaux stood in succession.
Close to the sea, and in particular, the Mont-Saint-Michel bay, Mayenne is bathed by a maritime climate. Rainfall is moderate but frequent (around 160 days per year), particularly from October to February. Temperatures are mild, and vary little (4 to 5° C in winter, 18 to 20° C in summer) and there are sunny days nearly 1,800 hours per year.
