The link between the Atlantic, the English Channel and the Iroise Sea, this westernmost of departments cultivates its contrasts passionately. A charming port and city of art and history or a city focused on the future: the visitor has a clear choice...
From Morlaix, where the square meter for older property sells for around 900 €, to the very touristy Bénodet, where prices are over 3,000 €, there is a big disparity depending on the city: the square meter goes for around 1,400 € in Brest, Douarnenez and Quimper; and 1,870 € in Roscoff, about the departmental average (1,770 €) and 2,100 € in Concarneau. As for houses, the average is 165,000 €, with the same hierarchical structure as for apartments, according to the scale prepared by La Vie immobilière.
Typical of Finistère, houses with overhangs are rectangular buildings, with one or more modest-sized avant-corps located on the gable extension. The overhang is integrated into the home, forming an enclave on one side of the shared hall. It usually held the table and benches.
Eight daily TGV connections link Paris to Brest or Quimper in 4 h. 20 min.
Brest can be reached by air from Paris, Nice, Marseille, Lyon and Nantes. Several daily Paris-Quimper flights are also available.
A lacy coastline, bristling with lighthouses and reefs, practically incredible islands – Sein, Ouessant, Glénans the archipelago –, three capes pointing towards the open sea, among which are the famed points du Raz: the outline of Finistère symbolizes in and of itself the Breton spirit. Between the cliffs and granite spurs, the earth gladly softens, opening the way to wild beaches, tiny fishing ports or, on the contrary, on vast bays, such as those in Douarnenez or Audierne.
Everywhere, Neolithic remains, sanctuaries and medieval towns recount that tumultuous past.
As for outdoor activities, a large part of the department has been classified as a nature park, both inland and along the coast.
Finistère enjoys a maritime climate. Rains, frequent but light, range from single to double digits between the coastline (700 mm annually) and the heights of the Monts d'Arrée (up to 1,500 mm). The sea, a veritable thermostat, ensures very mild temperatures all year long.
