Real estate Côtes-d’Armor: where two worlds meet

A granite setting in the midst of an omnipresent sea, a coastline strewn with lace-like islands… the department is a celebration of the union of land and sea.

 Real estate trends

The average price per square meter is at about 1,800 €, according to La Vie immobilière, with significant differences between Saint-Brieuc (1,324 €) and Perros-Guirec (2,448 €). As for houses, the departmental average is 165,000 €. However, you can still find townhouses to be modernized for under 100,000 €, and farmhouses for renovation for around 150,000 €. Exclusive properties, manors and executive homes start at 700,000 €.

Traditional housing

As France's main granite basin, the department has always quarried this exceptionally hard stone to build its churches and dwellings. Although traditionally thatched, roofs have recently been switched to slate.

Location

Thanks to the TGV, Saint-Brieuc is now 2 h 50 min from Paris. Add another hour to reach Lannion, in the western corner of the department.

There are also daily Paris-Lannion flights.

Saint-Brieuc, for its part, is linked by air to the major cities in the United Kingdom via a stopover in Newquay.

Scenery and activities

The interior, with its groves, moors and woodlands, has its share of wonders to behold, but it's the sea that first draws the visitor's eye. Picturesque fishing ports such as Paimpol hark back to the big time of terre-neuvas and family seaside resorts studded with Belle-Epoque villas… the jagged coastline brings a new setting at every turn.

As everywhere in Brittany, the earth is extended by fascinating islands: a tropical plant haven like Bréhat, or a migratory bird refuge. Rivers end in rias, narrow estuaries of predominantly fresh or saline water, following the tides.

On the heritage side, the department is also replete with châteaux (such as the renowned La Latte fort), fortresses, granite churches and Gothic cathedrals.

Weather

With a temperate maritime climate, Côtes-d'Armor characteristically has a moderate temperature range: mild winters, pleasant summers. Precipitation falls as drizzle and is more abundant in fall and winter. Nonetheless, the weather is quite changeable and rarely does a day go by without sun.

In town

  • Saint-Brieuc: Nestled in the heart of the fifth bay in the world for the amplitude of its tides – over 7 kilometers – the prefecture of Côtes-d'Armor is the center of a metropolitan area of some 120,000 inhabitants. Dynamic and focused on the future, the city is 4th in Brittany in terms of creating businesses.
  • Dinan: A city of art and history, perched on a plateau overlooking the Rance estuary, the city retains its feudal spirit. Its ramparts, built from the 13th to the 15th Centuries, are the oldest in Brittany.
