A rugged land cradled in the arms of the billowing Atlantic, the English Channel and the Iroise Sea, Brittany has an amazing mass of exceptional sites to reveal to its visitors, and a several thousand year old history to tell.
Côtes d'Armor (22), Finistère (29), Ille et Vilaine (35), Morbihan (56)
While the most renowned islands, the Gulf of Morbihan and, to a lesser extent, Dinard and Saint-Malo are now very costly, it is still possible to settle in less expensively. Many townhouses in need of renovation are available for sale for under 100,000 €, and you can find stone farm style country homes with excellent potential for a very little more.
An historic land, Brittany also has an abundance of executive homes and manors. Expect to pay between 700,000 and 1,500,000 €.
From Morbihan farm style country homes to Côtes-d'Armor granite buildings, Brittany's architectural styles vary according to its resources. One thing never changes, though: a determination to always build functional, economical homes. Driftwood and earth have been used to frame buildings.
Brittany has always turned its eye to the sea and its myriad islands, from Bréhat to Molène and Sein to Hoedic. With 2,800 km of coastline, Brittany occupies 40% of the coast of France. Strolling the famous Sentier des Douaniers takes you along a string of cliffs, dunes, granite boulder fields and golden sandy beaches.
Lighthouses perch atop crags everywhere, tokens of a sometimes tragic maritime past.
Inland, the misty Montagnes Noires and Monts d'Arrée remind us that Brittany has her share of legends: elves and korrigans; Merlin the Magician, Morgana and the fairy Vivien in the famous Brocéliande forest…
It has been marked since time immemorial by a dogged human presence, as can be seen in its countless dolmens, standing stones and other tumuli dotting its landscapes, the region still celebrates its beliefs. The local saints are honored in large pardons, those festive processions which, from wayside crosses to chapels, punctuate summer evenings.
"No torrential rains here." Brittany is subject to frequent drizzle but, thanks to its maritime exposure, its climate is the mildest in the northern half of the country. Its weather is very changeable, with more than 2,000 hours per year of sunshine and infrequent frosts.
