Extraordinary natural surroundings, an exceptionally dense cultural heritage, and gastronomy recognized worldwide, thanks to its foie gras and Bordeaux wines… Aquitaine, which includes the Landes, the Gironde, Dordogne, the Lot et Garonne and the Pyrénées Atlantiques, is a region famed for good living that lives up to its reputation.

The region is appealing and prices reflect it. In the most prized coastal districts – Biarritz, Saint-Jean-de-Luz and Cap Ferret –, the price per m² often tops 5,000 €. Locating that dream home in the Bordeaux area has turned into a daunting task.
However, in the Béarn, Périgord or the Lot-et-Garonne, you can still come across bargains. In Périgueux, Agen or Mont-de-Marsan, apartments go for 1,500 € per m² . In the same departments, Landes farms and other Périgord country houses remain affordable.
While the region enjoys a wide variety of architecture, wood is still very much in evidence. Buildings often have the wood frames and half-timbering so characteristic of Basque homes, Landes farms and Arcachon's villas. Once built of cob or bricks, the walls feature river rocks formed in the Lot and the Garonne.
With two of France's largest departments (the Gironde and the Landes) as part of its territory, Aquitaine is well endowed with natural beauty. Ocean side, there are some 250 km of coastal dunes, bathed by the Atlantic's impetuous tides. Landside, it has the vastest forest in Europe, the Pyrenees' first peaks, an abundance of lakes and ponds and some 1,000 km of waterways.
A peaceful haven for hikers, a refuge for a dazzling array of wild fauna, Aquitaine also boasts a tumultuous past. And it has an outstanding cultural heritage to show for it. Dordogne has more than 1,000 castles and 200 prehistoric stations, including the famous cave of Lascaux. Spread over the entire region, 300 fortified towns – those "new cities" founded during the Middle Ages – attest to medieval urban planning. Today's cities, like Villeneuve-sur-Lot, have been built around those ancient crisscrossing, narrow streets.
Nowadays, the people of Aquitaine, land of the Oval Ball, of the Basques’ pelota, and bullfighting events, love celebrating and good eating. All 3,000 Bordeaux wine chateaux are enjoyed, as well as foie gras, Périgord truffles, Espelette hot peppers… and Bayonne ham.
Thanks to the Atlantic Ocean, Aquitaine enjoys a maritime climate with mild winters and hot, but pleasant, summers. Freezing temperatures are unknown on the Basque coast, and rarely exceed 30 days per year in the rest of the region. Precipitation is not excessive and sunny days are frequent: more than 2,000 hours per year.
